New Zealand Copyright Council members gathered on World IP Day to celebrate creativity and encourage protection of intellectual property.

Established by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) in 2001, World Intellectual Property Day is held each year on 26 April to "raise awareness of the role of intellectual property in our daily lives, and to celebrate the contribution made by innovators and artists to the development of societies across the globe".

Council members hosted an event, attended by Associate Commerce Minister Judith Tizard.

As part of the New Zealand activities, three prominent New Zealand artists were interviewed on copyright issues. A short film clip was launched at the head quarters of the Australasian Performing Right Association (APRA). The film clip can be viewed at the Copyright Council of New Zealand Home page, the Copyright Owners' page and the Copyright Users' page.

The launch is the first of a series of activities in a campaign to raise awareness about intellectual property and copyright issues.

The Copyright Council of New Zealand was incorporated in 1983 as a non-profit society to provide copyright and cultural based industries with a range of services including an interface with Government. It currently has 23 members representing a wide spectrum of copyright creators and owners.
